Calgary may have one of the highest standards of living in Canada, but not all Calgarians are benefitting from it. Many live in poverty, trying to make ends meet with low-paying work or multiple part-time jobs. In 2005, there were 119,000 Calgarians living in poverty (Calgary and Region Social Outlook 2007-2012). The Poverty Reduction Coalition believes that poverty can be reduced in Calgary. Partnering with all levels of government, the business community, social service organizations and community members, the Coalition addresses systemic barriers and policies that prevent low-income individuals and families from moving beyond the cycle of poverty. We’ve created this site to help you learn more about poverty reduction efforts in Calgary. We hope you’ll find it a valuable resource for up-to-date information, research and local poverty statistics. The Poverty Reduction Coalition is a United Way of Calgary and Area initative directed by community leaders. |
