A NEW NAME AND LOOK!
Our name
The gestation period has been long and sometimes uncomfortable, but a new name has been born!
In 2004, United Way of Calgary and Area formed the Sustained Poverty Reduction Initiative to leverage people, resources and influence to reduce the causes and effects of poverty. It quickly became apparent that Sustained Poverty Reduction Initiative was an unwieldy title – lending itself to unfortunate shortcuts such as “Sustained Poverty” (certainly not the intention of the initiative!).
The newly coined Poverty Reduction Coalition is a community collaborative supported by United Way of Calgary and Area, aimed at reducing poverty in Calgary.
Our logo
We are delighted to unveil the new Poverty Reduction Coalition logo! Jimi Scherer of A Jimi Thing designed the logo to represent the four focus areas of the Poverty Reduction Coalition:
- Supports for Women & Children
- Economic Wellbeing
- Affordable Housing
- Community Engagement and Awareness
We encourage all of our stakeholders to add the Poverty Reduction Coalition logo to their website.

Watch for our new website
Keep your eyes peeled in August for the new Poverty Reduction Coalition website at www.reducepoverty.ca.
Soon it will be easy to access the Coalition’s published reports, find updates on relevant changes within all three levels of government and better understand the intricacies of the Poverty Reduction Coalition.
