SURVIVAL-RELATED CRIMES INITIATIVE
The Elizabeth Fry Society recently released a surprising finding: on any given day, two to three women are incarcerated in the Calgary Remand Centre for failure to pay their fines. In response to this report, the Poverty Reduction Coalition and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary have embarked on a joint research project through which we hope to challenge the barriers and confront the issues faced by women who commit survival-related crimes. Preliminary findings of the project indicate that many women are breaking the law simply to make ends meet. More information about this joint initiative can be found on the Poverty Reduction Coalition website, www.reducepoverty.ca, or by clicking here.
